On the starry, moonlit night of Wednesday 14th March, 2007, tourists and locals alike were treated to the wonderful sounds of the PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra at the PCS Starlift House of Music, Mucurapo Road, Port of Spain. Starlift's musical performance is part of a mini-concert series produced by Terry Joseph in conjunction with the Tourism Development Company Limited (TDC) and Pan Trinbago to highlight aspects of Trinidad and Tobago to its visitors. This company was formed in 2005 and is the implementation arm of the Ministry of Tourism.
The pan yard was quite cool and cozy and filled with hundreds of lovers of pan music as well as with novices who were new to the pan experience. There were many tourists at the pan yard from England, Bermuda, Japan, and the United States of America. Many, seeing the TDC event as an educational experience, were more contented to pay attention to the performances rather than to get into the type of jubilations usually associated with Carnival. In attendance were political figures such as Minister of Tourism, Howard Chin Lee and Minister of Public Utilities and the Environment, Penelope Beckles and other notable men and women in the Steelpan and Carnival industries.
Before the pan session had begun, those in attendance, particularly the tourists, had been treated to tastes of our Carnival heritage including J'ouvert mas with the Paramin Blue Devils, Carnival costumes courtesy of Rosalind Gabriel's 2007 presentation "Many Faces, One Nation" and Chutney music by the Unity Tassa Group.
Guitarist, Michael Bootman accompanied by PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra Guest performing were Calypsonian 'Skatie' who sang three tunes, much to the pleasure of the audience and legendary guitarist, Michael Boothman, who played two of his original compositions alongside the Starlift Steel Orchestra.
After the intermission, the stars of Starlift who were initially garbed in midnight blue came out in white and completely dazzled the stage. They played a few more of their hit tunes including Ella Andall's "Feel Like Dancing", The Beatles' "Penny Lane", James Ingram's "One Hundred Ways" and Destra's "I Dare You" before ending the show at the ten o'clock hour.
The show must be commended for its punctuality, its simple yet attractive open area and the magnificent musical performances that it offered. It would be good if this trend continues into the rest of the Panyard Sensation concert series that includes Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars on Sunday 18th March and bpTT Renegades Steel Orchestra on Friday 23rd March.
