Staff Article
Interview Recorded: April 20, 2006
For the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane 2K6 Competition, bands were judged, as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Mr. Kenroy Lockhart, Captain, and Mr. Anthony 'Benup' Kinsale, Manager of Laventille Serenaders.
TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Lockhart, how long has this band been in existence?
KENROY: This band has been in existence between nine to ten years now.
TRINBAGOPAN: What is the band's tune of choice?
KENROY: Our tune of choice is "Devoted to You" by The Everly Brothers.
TRINBAGOPAN: Could you give us a little history about the band?
KENROY: This band was formed by Mr. Anthony 'Benup' Kinsale. He had a vision to enhance the youths from the area. The elder players around joined him and they formed this band. Following that, every Panorama we played, we made it to the finals except this year and 2004. We had about three second places and about four third places. We have always been in the 'big five' in Panorama. However, this year we dropped to six. Things do not always go as good as you would like it, but always put out our best efforts. We also have a new Pan Theatre.
TRINBAGOPAN: How has the community responded towards this pan side?
KENROY: We always get total support.
TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have any final words?
KENROY: We will be representing 'The Hill' in this competition.
TRINBAGOPAN: Thank You.
TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Kinsale, could you tell us a bit about your involvement with the band?
ANTHONY: I was very instrumental in creating this band. The main purpose was to avoid the youths from going astray and getting involved with the violence. I am an elder in the area and I choose to contribute part of my musical skills in order to help the youths. We are doing our best so far. We have 'A' Levels and 'O' Levels musicians. We have people who could read and some who cannot write. We do practical work with the ones who cannot read and they are doing quite good so far.
TRINBAGOPAN: Which Steelband did you play with before?
ANTHONY: Well, Despers is my life. That band is my foundation. I started with Desperados from since I was about twelve years old. I traveled all over the world with Desperados. I gained all of my experiences from them. From there, I decided to do something individually and contribute to the people in the country. I love Despers and I could never forget that band because I broke out from there. I learned under the seniors like Elias Phillip, Dennis Ashe, Rudolph Charles and Kenneth Charles. I am enjoying what I am doing so far.
TRINBAGOPAN: Tell me a bit about the band's tune of choice.
ANTHONY: Our tune of choice "Devoted to You" by The Everly Brothers is a song from in the 60's, before I was born. It's a nice choice for a tune. I hope the public enjoys it and I wish us all the best to make the finals. I would like to thank Laventille Serenaders players for their devotion. Also, I wish to thank the parents for giving the members the opportunity to form this musical instrument and give Laventille a better name. People think Laventille has crime alone; it really has professional musicians.
TRINBAGOPAN: Thank You.
