Bharat Mahadeo & Louis Smith of All Aces
Staff Article
Interview Recorded: April 21, 2006
For the preliminary round of the Pan Down Memory Lane 2K6 Competition, bands were judged, as in previous years, in their communities. We interviewed some of the key people within the bands about the competition, their history and other activities in the steelband arena. We spoke with Mr. Bharat Mahadeo, Captain, and Mr. Louis Smith, Arranger of All Aces.
TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Mahadeo, could you tell us a bit about All Aces?
BHARAT: All Aces is a whole band from since I was a little boy. We revived the band about three years now.
TRINBAGOPAN: What song is the band performing?
BHARAT: The band will be performing "Happy Wanderer".
TRINBAGOPAN: Since the band has been revived, what are some of your best experiences?
BHARAT: We took part in the Bomb Competition for Carnival and won.
TRINBAGOPAN: What has the response in the community been so far?
BHARAT: It's been overwhelming.
TRINBAGOPAN: Do you have any final words?
BHARAT: I hope we win.
TRINBAGOPAN: Thank you.
TRINBAGOPAN: Mr. Smith, can you share a bit of information about the arrangement you did?
LOUIS: Because it's Pan Down Memory Lane, we decided to bring back a tune that was once very popular here. The song "Happy Wanderer" is an old German song that was quite popular somewhere around the 50's. Since we are going 'Down Memory Lane', we might as well go with that. We went with it and we did it well enough for this part of the competition.
TRINBAGOPAN: How long have you been arranging now?
LOUIS: I have been arranging for some time now. Most of the work I did was outside of Trinidad. I lived abroad for a long time. I lived in Canada, United States, South America, England and so on. Since I have been here, I have been doing work with small groups around and things like that. I have been at it for a while.
TRINBAGOPAN: Thank you.
